I Am a History Nut
My wife and I have lived in Virginia since 1994. This is the land of the Civil War. Many major battles were won and lost here by both sides. Winchester changed changes so many times. The Civil War (War of Northern Aggression in the South) is still in the subconscious here, as is slavery and race. People, both white and Black do not talk about either slavery or race here, but jubilate in and re-enact the Civil War constantly. I think that is a subtle way to say they wish for the good old days of the slave plantation, Black codes, Knights of the Golden Circle and Jim Crow.
Anyway, I have visited a few battlefields here, and have driven through the Battle of the Wilderness 100's of times making my medical rounds as an RN.
Long story short-I married a Yankee. Best decision I ever made. Though I was born in Texas many moons ago (or did I moon Texas many years ago?), I now live in VA. I claim this as home. even more so this is my home, because the Original European ancestor on my mom's side came over in 1690. He was an indentured servant, became wealthy and founded the town of Midlothian, VA. No wonder I felt more at home here than in Texas. Half of my roots go back to 1690's here in the old Dominion!
By the way the Civil War is actually the War of Southern Aggression, which included decades of aggression against Blacks, and well as against the Constitution of the United States. Then they got testy and wanted the Federal Government to enforce slavery in the North, as well as the new states coming into the Union. The Confederacy wanted to engulf the US, Mexico, and the Caribbean in the Golden Circle of the great White Slave known as the Confederate States of America.
Thanks and God bless you all.Long live the Union,
