I Am a Millionaire
Thirty years ago I was dead broke, working 2 jobs and digging myself a grave. I was working at a gas station part time, in addition to my full time regular job. I had encountered some unexpected exoenses. I was frantically working to pay them off, and hadn't eaten anything in nearly 2 days!
An old farmer came by to buy some gas, driving an old pick- up truck. He was kind enough to give me a big shiny red apple! Nothing ever tasted so good! I'll never forget that so long as I live!
Financially, things got worse and worse. I can even remember going to a cafeteria, writing a check, then selling a pint of blood to get cash to cover the check! (Back then they had something called float-time!) Shortly after I developed a kidney stone. Talk about pain! In addition, I had $1500 in medical bills to pay.
My big break came the next month. I got the job I had always wanted .I was earning more than twice what I was making before. Paid off the people who had lant me money first. Then I tackled my other bills. I can remember the day. My bills were all paid off, and I had $182.57 left in my pocket! To me that was just like a million dollars!
Twenty years later, I WAS a millionaire. Can't explain it when I first found out I was. Sure, I liked the feeling, but all that really changed was simply the knowledge I WAS a millionaire. I didn't really fell any different.
It's been thirty years since I was broke. I would never want to be like that again. I wouldn't wish it on anyone else. But on the inside, I am probably a better person for having experienced it! I never forgot it, nor the people who helped me and encouraged me along the way!
It was just a few months ago. I was filling up my car at the gas station. While pumping my gas, a young couple approached me:
"Please, mister, can you buy us just a little gas? We have nothing."
I had been around the block long enough to distingush a con job and a legitimate call for help. These kids were desperate.
"What kind of gas do you use?" I asked. They showed me the pump.
"Bring it over, " I directed them.
I started filling their pick-up. As the meter rolled on, the young man looked at the gal as gasped.
"My, God, do you see that?'
The girl said to me. "Sir, you don't have to do this much."
"Don't worry about it" I told her. I filled up the tank to the brim. It was over $60.00.
The young man said to me. "Sir we can't pay you."
I looked at both of them. "You don't have to. You're having tough times, but you'll pull out of it. I know you will. But remember this. You needed help. I helped you. Some time down the road someone will need help from you. You help them the same way. Understand?"
"Yes sir" They waved to me as they drove off. Somehow I think the old man who gave me that apple thirty years ago was looking down from heaven and smiling!
