I Am a Mother
"Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the sidewalk before it stops snowing" -Phyllis Diller
I don’t know why we do it. Having children always seems like a good idea at the moment. Before the first child arrives, you’re so full of hope and love and time and patience and disposable income. When the first child arrives, reality slips in, but by then you’re already sentenced to life without parole. You convince yourself that having children was a good idea, so you buckle-down, determined to prove yourself right. The ideas you had about parenting before you had children begin to change. You adapt because your children are excellent teachers. Your love grows exponentially and it’s a frustrating yet amazing experience!
"While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about" -Angela Schwindt
You think you’re teaching THEM how to live in this world, but they’re really teaching YOU.
I have a beautiful daughter. She is fun, original, and infinitely creative. She is the sparkle of light off a finely cut gemstone, the pleasing sound of a chime in the summer breeze, the dew on the morning grass when kissed by the morning light. She has taught me many things that I was reluctant to learn. From my daughter, I learned true love, forgiveness, and grace. I learned to let go while keeping a warm place in my heart just for her. She is far away, but forever a part of me, a resident spirit in my soul. I have an enormous love for her that is so huge, that it can never be diminished. Thank you Anna! You have taught me more than I ever imagined! You have been, and will always be, an amazing woman!
I have two handsome sons. They are full of life, laughter, and new perspectives! While one embraces action and revels in activity and new experiences, the other appreciates the beauty which can only be found at a slower pace. They represent a balance in my life. Opposites in almost every way, they have taught me the joy of expanding my life, living it to the fullest, while taking moments to slow down and savor the gifts which are missed at a higher pace. Both sons are intellectually bright and original. As opposite as they are, they have taught me how to get along with people who are different than me. They have taught me endurance and faith. Thank you Dominik and Tristan! You are still boys, becoming awesome men!
Who would I be if I had not had my children, but a shadow of the woman I am today? Life would not hold the same spark, the same quality, and the same valuable lessons. I am SO blessed!
"There are lives I can imagine without children but none of them have the same laughter & noise" - Brian Andreas
I think God has made previous plans for people, such as me, who become parents. He sows the idea in your heart, knowing you cannot resist it. I believe he sees us as people who need to learn more about life the hard way, and so blesses us with the gifts and learning that only having children can provide.
When the lessons take hold, you realize that the disposable income was not what mattered in life. What mattered were unwavering love and the journey itself. You learn that hope endures; love is forever, and the journey worth taking.
"When you take the time to actually listen, with humility, to what people have to say, it's amazing what you can learn. Especially if the people who are doing the talking also happen to be children. " -Greg Mortenson
