I Have Underlying Excitement to My Life...

A personal story in the experience: I Am a New Member At Experience Project
T his is not my first story, its my second!

My family and I run an orphanage in India. We moved out here from Australia to run it. Its the most amazing thing ever! I love it to bits and wouldnt trade my life for anything.

That said... its the hardest, most frustrating, challenging thing I have ever done with my life. The kids are beautiful and without the joy they bring I would collapse internally. The thing that hurts is that living in the poverty of this place I get seen so often as just "white money" and thats the way people treat me.

My orphanage runs on a very shrewd and limited budget and so I am very careful when it comes to spending money. You would think that if someone was buying something for orphan children (ie food) then the storekeeper would probably give them a discount or at least be very supportive... its the opposite here. Every day I have to fight (metaphorically speaking here) against people who try to leech money out of our orphanage. Whether it is the milkman or the guy I am buying bricks from to build a new hostel... I gotta "arm wrestle" my way to a reasonable price.

On top of all of this there is a daily slew of beggers, salesman, workers and contractors that flood my office wanting "a piece of the action". It can be most frustrating at times...

Anyway, dont want to go on to much about that. :) Lets get back to me.

I am Clifton, 24 years old and lovin it. My wife, an orphan, spent 22 years at our orphanage growing up to become the amazing woman she is today. My parents are here in India with me, mostly retired but they still keep busy doing everything they can.

My orphanage has close to 100 kids, who are all brought up with good morals, education and training. They all speak English (except the babies who cant speak at all and a 13 year old girl who was just brought in by the police a few weeks back).

The single greatest moment in my life was picking a baby up that had been thrown in a drain to die and watching her over just a few weeks transform from a barely recognisable skelleton to a beautiful baby girl.

I love making friends, and though I dont have heaps of time for it -I want to try and hang out on these forums a bit.

Well I think I better not make this any longer... :)

Clifton.

I looked at your website and loved seeing how the babies start looking really healthy after a short time at your orphanage, you really are doing a great job. It is incredible that Roshni when admitted was so thin, poor baby, then the next photo she looks so well. Also I loved to see Debby who is such a healthy looking baby. The children all look really well looked after and happy.
Also Rohit who has an inoperable tumor on his face, is it because he is in India. In Adelaide they have a craniofacial unit, I have heard of children being brought from overseas for treatment. There are a few websites about it, here is one of them.... http://www.wch.sa.gov.au/services/az/divisions/psurg/craniofacial/index.html Usually organisations such as the Lions help out.

Hey Kattrise, yeah we have tried heaps of different doctors/hospitals... we also had him set up with a team of doctors from Australia -but there were some major complications and I guess they just kinda labelled it "in-operable"... that sure doesnt mean that we have given up on him though. He is such a brilliant kid, naughty, but still heaps and heaps of fun! :)
