Menace To Society

We've all heard some variant of the saying "respect each other's beliefs", but I'm going to go ahead and disagree with that statement. Emphatically. I will not respect beliefs until they have earned it. Quite frankly, beliefs encourage ignorance. They will often disregard critical thinking for the sake of protecting their own ego. Ignorance is a ubiquitous problem that underlies most of humanity's woes. Throughout history, and to this day, people have believed in unsubstantiated bullshit. People will just believe whatever they find convenient to believe in, despite the lack of evidence. Sometimes it's harmless. Dancing around with a dead chicken hasn't done too much damage. But there are times beliefs become a threat to society. Things like racism, sexism, homophobia, and genocide have all sprouted from one belief system or another. It doesn't take long to figure out that those beliefs are an impediment to progress. Now I understand that most beliefs can't be proven or disproven, but with a little bit of logic they can at least be made reasonable. And I have no objections to reasonable beliefs. But if I feel like a particular belief is unreasonable, I will criticize it. It's nothing personal, I just have the fate of the planet in mind.
