Sober @ 19

A personal story in the experience: I Am a Recovering Alcoholic

Personally I think I was born an alcoholic. I grew up the child of an alcoholic. And all my early memories deal with my father’s drinking and wanting to share in his “happiness”.  I was lucky that when my drinking at age 13 begin to take off my father got sober. I was very shy teenage and   I rediscovered drinking when I was 15 as way of loosening my social inhibitions.  For the next two years life was great for me until I went away to college where everything turned on me.  Joy became sorrow, and I battled the most God Awful depression that the only way I knew how to deal with was to drown in a fifth of bourbon.  The depression and the drinking only got worse. I drank my twice out of college and almost drank my way out of the Navy. I came very close to killing myself the night of my last drink. I really had no desire to live anymore. It was that bad.  On September 3rd 1989 after  heavy night of drinking I was left on my knees w/ a razor to my wrists and prayed my first sincere prayer in my life, for God to help me.  That lead me to the rooms of AA.  Getting and staying sober @ 19 was not easy and have had plenty of pitfalls along this path the happy destiny, but I have learned how to live life sober and have the most awesome friends in the world.

That was inspiring! I didn't start til I was 19. I see more and more young people at AA these days. And there are a lot of young people's meetings too!
