Never Had a Bad Childhood

A personal story in the experience: I Am a Recovering Alcoholic
W hy do people always assume you drank because you had a bad childhood or a traumatic experience.  When people ask me why i drank i tell them "i just fell into it", because i did.

My life has totally changed for the better now i am alcohol free, it is hard to believe that i was the same person.

But i found now that when i associate with new people, they find it totally unusual that I dont drink alcohol.  Sometimes i find it hard, because where do I fit now.  For me stopping drinking meant coming to terms with never having a drink again, for whatever reason.

You fit in with me girl! I'm now in the program - I joke with my friends and my new recently met friends that I'm a member of the Sisters of the Secret Society and they laugh. So we are sisters. I go to a lot of meetings right now, mostly women's groups because that's where I feel more comfortable and that's where I fit in.

Peace out

Hello Wasmessedup,

I drank b/c I was shy, and drinking made it easier to socialize. I have been sober a while now, but still get the strange looks from people who find out I don't drink. You will get used to it. Congrats on your sobriety.
