I Just Can't Stop.

I am now over 50k in debt because of shopping. I'm starting to not even be able to pay my bills. I'm not even sure how to begin to stop shopping. I itch to shop every day... especially when I'm bored. I want to be out of debt, I want to not have to depend on buying something new anything to make me happy... what can I do?

We do not now, nor have we ever had a credit card. We married forty years ago and decided that if we didn't have the cash, we didn't need to make a purchase. There were many days eating popcorn and peanut butter aand jelly. Today we own a custom built home (paid in full, no mortgage), own three cars and have remained debt free. I retired at the ripe old age of 55 with enough saved to live off the income of our savings through our retirement. How was it possible? If you have to save in advance for the things you want, you have to REALLY want them. The money we did not pay our in interest went into the bank and thanks to the magic of compounding, we have a few dollars set aside. No stock market for us. I did and still do not trust the stock market and besides, I'm just a high school graduate. How could I possible understand all that complicated financial data? <br />

Meantime, I have watched some very educated folks go bankrupt and most people go into debt that they could not possibly pay off in this lifetime. I just don't get it.

I filed for Bankruptcy two years ago. Now I have to pay cash for everything. This has helped me a great deal in slowing down the process and only buying things that I really need. The urge is still there, but not as easy to act one. I know that doing that is not an appealing option..but thats what worked for me.
