I watched The Brave One the other night. At some point Erica, whose boyfriend has been beaten to death, interviews detective Mercer. He asks her how she pulled it back together after what happened to her.

She just replies: "You don't. You become someone else."

This felt so true. Isn't this what you do when **** happens to you? You don't pull things back together, because everything has irremediably been smashed and destroyed.

No, I didn't get through such tough **** as half of you, and certainly not through the **** Erica's character did. But **** happened, and it changed me. I am no longer the person I was before 2009, and I am forever trying to understand who I am, who I have become.

"There is no going back, to that other person, that other place. This thing, this stranger, she is all you are now. "
