A personal story in the experience: I Am a Teacher
A s part of the Chalk it Up to Teachers campaign, Teach for America and Experience Project bring you this teacher's story through an interview

Christian Orozco, 11th and 12 grade, US History, English Language Development, San Jose

Why did you join Teach For America · Bay Area?

I joined Teach For America because I have experienced firsthand the opportunities education affords. I grew up in a community similar to the one I teach in— overwhelmingly Latino, working class families—and wanted to contribute to my roots. I am here to provide my students with the valuable tools and skill sets to do well and to obtain higher education. I wanted to teach in the Bay Area because of its diverse community.

What are your favorite things about teaching?I love teaching because it really allows each teacher the freedom to tailor the lesson to his or her style. Teachers with an assortment of personalities can implement different norms, procedures and consequences. In addition, all teachers have the luxury of incorporating different hooks that inevitably grab their students’ attention—whether it’s Tupac lyrics of Cesar Chavez’s speeches. Of course, even with the freedom to choose a myriad of ways to present a lesson, all lessons much have the steadfast rules that all effective lesson plans have.
