How do you feel about your time in the Teach For America Bay Area corps?
Teach For America has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. A Teach For America teacher goes from college graduate to “CEO” of their classroom. I, as well as every other TFA teacher, have served as an advocate, supervisor, custodian, counselor, mediator, social worker and friend to my students.
In addition, I have learned about the inequity of the American education system, which drives me to continually increase my effectiveness in the classroom. Teach For America has given me the skills to go into any field I choose, yet there’s no place I would rather be than in the front of a classroom filled with eager young students.
What personal goals have you set for yourself?
My personal goals are to continually develop as an instructor, to maintain positive relationships with my family and friends, and to appreciate and recognize the blessings which have been given to me.
What kinds of goals are your students trying to achieve?
It depends on the student! Students under a 4th grade reading level will grow two years in the area of reading comprehension. Those with a 4th grade level or above will grow at least 1.5 years. They will all average 80 percent mastery on key content standards, will maintain an organized notebook, and will recognize the appropriate behaviors of a 6th grader. Teachers are responsible for both academic and personal growth!
