Why did you join Teach For America · Bay Area?

I’ve never lived on the West Coast, and this seemed a brilliant opportunity not only to live in one of the most interesting regions of the United States but to teach in one of the most culturally diverse, socially progressive ones as well.

 

What personal goals have you set for yourself?

I want to have a lasting, positive effect on as many students as I can and truly enjoy myself while doing so.

Secondly, I want to take what I’ve learned from this job and do something equally as powerful with it. It is clear that education is determined holistically: the availability of high-quality instruction, health, nutrition and community resources all play a substantial role in the development of a child. I desperately want to be a part of creating and providing these things for American children.

 

What has been the most memorable moment of your teaching experience?

My most memorable moment was sitting with my students in class while Jabari, one of my 8th graders, accepted my challenge to write and perform a rap to the quadratic formula based on a Notorious B.I.G. song, and then later that week watching everyone silently mouth the song while taking their quiz. It’s moments like this that make you realize how much fun teaching really is.
