What led you to become a corps member for Teach For America?
Teach For America was the perfect opportunity for me to jump into the exciting field of education. I hoped that I would be able to use my creativity, meet great people, be challenged, and do it all while playing a part in building a better world. I got all of this and more, and I even got to live in a new part of the country.
Give us a quick sketch of a day in the life of a school leader.
Here’s a sketch of one of my busier days: I get up at around 6:30am and work from home for about an hour or so, preparing myself for what needs to be done that day. I get to school and begin to check in with everyone that I need to communicate with. I teach classes but on my prep periods and during my lunch I am emailing, making phone calls, or visiting new teachers to either advise, team-teach, or demonstrate teaching techniques. After school, I coach more teachers, grade papers, or email until I jump on the bus to get to my own grad school classes by 6pm. I am done with class at 9pm and get back home to my wife at around 10:00pm.
That’s a sketch of one of my fuller days, though I guess the lighter days are similar except I don’t have to go to class at night. The funny thing is that this schedule has never felt over burdensome for me – I am actually enjoying it! This is an indicator to me that I’m meant to be doing this work.
