I was a linguist and a code breaker and as such I was considered a non-combatant. The only time I fired a weapon was on night guard on the perimeter. They gave us an M79 grenade launcher and 50 rounds of HE grenades and told us to make a lot of noise to let the enemy we were awake and alert. Rocket attacks every 2-3 weeks were fire over our heads, aimed at the airbase about a click to the south but occasionally one fell short. I guess the enemy wasn't told of our status.
Welcome home brother and thank you for your service.

Getting shot at IS combat. It doesn't matter that the bullets did not hit their mark and rip into your flesh. What does matter is that you were faithful. You served and served honorably. Despite the hardships, you continued to live your life. You didn't give up. You're a survivor. Hang onto that and know there are millions more doing the same thing...hanging in there.

That said...Whatever trials came your way and whatever you endured, the only REAL thing, the only thing that makes a difference in anyone's life is their relationship with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If Jesus is on your side, that is enough. Always has been, always will be, and everyone will recognize that fact one day, even if they deny it today. In Heaven, there will be no more tears, that's a promise from God that no one can take from you, if you'll only believe on His Son, Jesus Christ as the forgiver of your sins and the savior of your soul.

I tink most of us never saw combat. For every one that exchanges fire with the enemy there are eight behind him doing the paperwork, delivering the supplies and other logistics. I was a crane operator on a floating machineshop that was glorified with a hull number (ARL-24.) I took beach fire a couple of times while on anchor watch. My job, other than operating the crane was to toss concussion grenades in the river to keep Chuck from being able to blow us to bits. I also had a sawed off Remington shotgun that would chew through a case of .00 buckshot in a four hour watch. Zippo boats took care of the small arms **** coming from the riverbank.
