i have immense respect for anyone in the military, i think its one of the most honorable things a peraon can do. but i definitely agree with AEIOU - do NOT enlist because of a boy!

I know what you mean about thinking about serving because you know someone who is in the Armed Services. I don't agree with AEIOU that you want to serve because of a boy. You cited what I think are excellent reason to join. I also get the impression that more than likely, you want to serve because knowing that person and seeing them navigate a military life successfully had changed the way you see yourself and the world.

My best friend of six years, who served in Irag as a Medic, is a 2nd Lt. in the Army and were it not for her I wouldn't want to join the Air Force. Were it not for knowing her, admiring her, and yes as corny as it sounds, wanting to be like her, I wouldn't have even dreamed of a military career.

Never has she once said to me, "I think you should join," However she has supported my recent decision, and she's the only one. Even a close friend of mine, now retired, with a 20yr Air Force career, doesn't support me whole heartedly.

But I feel strongly about it. I love writing and have a Bachelor's in Creative Writing and would like to enlist in the Air National Guard as a public affairs enlistee /military journalist.

No one understands my decision, especially my family. They make the most ridiculous comments and one conversation in particular left me feeling talked down to. I think mostly they're afraid I might be deployed, but I think if that does happen I will take it in stride. I figure millions have before me and am I so "special" that they put their lives/necks on the line and I get to shy away from it?

Okay, I've gone on for long enough now, so one last thing:)

I think if it's something you feel strongly about you should go for it. When all is said and done it's your life and I believe that no one knows better what's right for you than you do.

Here's to Wanna Be Air Force Women:)

Maybe you can let me know what you decide.
