I'm An Ice Chewer

I love chewing ice! I know it's bad for your teeth, but it's sooo good. It's considered a form of pica (eating non-nutritious substances like chalk, clay, starch, etc.), but I don't really care because it's just frozen water! I love going to Dunkin Donuts and getting a large cup of just ice. Then I suck on the big pieces until they're small enough to crunch. When the cup's been sitting around for a bit, I'll root through it to find the smaller pieces so I can crunch those.  I don't like shaved ice, and while some people like the ice from their refrigerator's ice maker, I can't stand it because it absorbs the scents of the frozen foods. I don't like the ice you can get from places like Burger King because the pieces are just too small and melt too quickly, and don't give a satisfying enough crunch.  Who else loves ice?

I love chewing ice.I love the ice consistency of the Subway ice but the ice their absorvs the aroma of the food there. When I was pregnant I craved it and only more recently started craving it more than ever. I usually eat a five pound bag a day at least. I will check at my next appointment to see if I am anemic. I considered ice a food because it is frozen water. Never thought of it as pica. addidction to non food items.

I had this habit since for a very long time now and i can't seems to stop it.When i had finished my drink i'll start chewing the ice on the drink.Having something icy in my mouth is the best.I don't think i can stop this habit but i'm kind of worried what will happen to my teeth in the future.

I love ice. The first time I felt the overwhelming urge to eat It was a snowy day and all I wanted to do was to eat the snow. I have had this problem for abut 3years now. I know it is because of my low iron and all I have to do is take iron pills for three days and the craving goes away but it feel so strange not having the ice that I don't always take the iron and besides the pill make me alittle sick. Anyway I love the stuff and Iknow all the spots where ther is great ice.

wow i thought i was a wierdo for chewing ice!i know my mum did it when she was having me so i put it down to this! i have broken my teeth a bit doing it but still i cant stop, its not the crunching i cant give up its just nothing else satisfies the need for the ice cold on my tongue, i love frozen milk as i find this doesn't ruin my teeth as its softer!im so happy im not the only one who does this and since i have a health problem where i get anemic from time to time im considering mentioning it to my dr!!

Apparently anemia can cause minor tongue swelling, which is what causes the ice craving! I no longer have the severe anemia, and haven't had an ice craving in more than a year. :D I kinda miss it in the summer. ;)

oh my gosh I am 7 months pregnant and just started craving ice in a bad way in the last month well yesterday my doctor checked my iron and the level is so low... I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this addiction and that there hopefully is a solution because I have been driving my husband nuts!

I don't know, chovhani, but that has always fascinated me, too! One of the weirder scientific connections ever made; anemia and ice-chewing...

This one fascinates me. Why is it related to anemia?

I take an iron supplement daily, and it has helped me to crave ice less. It even tastes differently now. But I still love having something to suck on and chew that is calorie free, sugar free, and flavor free!
