Congrats on your root canal. I know it's a little scary, but honestly it saved you so much pain and hassle in the future. My friend has the same fear, I basically had him meet my dentist in Ottawa so he could release some of the fears he has, I think it helped a little.

Well done on getting through your root canal, I have never had a root canal, but am still afraid of the drill.

I hear your fear of the dentist. I hate the dentist so much, in fact, a simple check-up and cleaning scares the hell out of me. Well, that all changed yesterday. Maybe this story will help you, but it certainly helped me put to rest my HUGE fear of the dentist. About a year ago, I had a molar that started to hurt a little... bah, no biggie, I thought and avoided getting it looked at for the longest time and kept the pain at bay by taking ibuprofen and buying toothpaste for sensitive teeth . It was working until about 4 days ago, when the pain in that particular tooth got excruciating to the point where it almost brought me to tears. I couldn't sleep or would wake up in the middle of the night from the pain. I like to think that I'm fairly tough-skinned when it comes to pain issues, but this was TOO much. I couldn't take it anymore and caved in by going to get it looked at. The dentist, a super nice man, was not impressed. He took an x-ray and said that I had to have a root canal ("root canal" is the same as "we have torture you and it will cause you extreme pain" for me). I was horrified. I didn't know what to do... one thing I did know, however, was that nothing could be worse than what I had been going through the past few days. He prescribed antibiotics and scheduled me for the procedure the following day (yesterday). Wow, did I not sleep that night. The next day, the pain had not subsided and the abscess, on top of everything, had decided to flair up. Argh!!!! More pain! So, I went begrudgingly to my appointment... the first thing he did was numb my gum with some gel on a q-tip and then brought the dreaded needle. I felt nothing more than what a light scratch would feel like. He gave me 3 and felt neither of them... then he started the root canal where he basically made a hole in the top of the tooth to get access to the roots inside to drill out and remove the decay. Then he filled it up with stuff, capped it off and I was outta there! Imagine that! A root canal where I FELT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I couldn't (and still can't) believe it. An hour after the procedure, I was at the pub having beers with my friends! Even today, the day after, I haven't had the slightest bit of pain or discomfort! It's as if nothing at all happened! Now I'm figuring, if a root canal (which is supposed to be worst thing you can go through at the dentist) didn't hurt, why don't I get the rest of my teeth fixed!
