I Am Afraid to Participate In Class

I have a fear of participating in class. First of, whenever I get the wrong answer, the class laugh at me. Second, if I raise my hand in class too often, I might be labeled as a teacher's pet. For the majority of the time, my hand is down. Sometimes, I try to raise my hand, but it just limps and goes down. I think class participation is the hardest thing for me. 

Update: A few months after writing this story, I gained more confidence, and is able to participate in class now.

    some people don't like public speaking and are afraid of it. I didn't like speaking up in class because I didn't like the idea of speaking in front of the group. I think it gets easier when you get older. I took few workshops years after high school, and in there you have to speak up in front of the group, and tell about yourself; I was a little bit nervous, and after my third workshop, I wasn't even afraid of speaking up. I guess the more you do it, the less frightening it gets.
