Laughed At By Psychiatrist

A personal story in the experience: I Am Against Antidepressants
I 've been on some form of meds for Panic Disorder since I was 16. My Panic Disorder also began "out of the blue" and became associated with situations as time went on. I was prescribed Xanax, but my tolerance went up very fast. When I was 21 a psychiatrist put me on Paxil. Since then I've been on Celexa, Lexapro, and Wellbutrin SR (at 23 I was switched off Xanax to Klonopin which works quite well for panic).

Anyway, I went to a new psychiatrist with the intention of ditching the antidepressants and keeping the Klonopin (since it works). First off, panic disorder was the cause of my depression. I went from an active 16 yr. old to a house-bound basket case. Second, depression kicked in from not being able to be the teenager I should have been. But I digress...

I explained to the doc that I wanted off antidepressants since I felt that a good exercise program and meditation were better coping tools to deal with depression and stress.  She pretty much laughed at me and prescribed Zoloft and Wellbutrin XL along with a tapering schedule for the Klonopin. I may not be a doctor, but doesn't it seem to be a bit counter intuitive? I'm fully aware that I have a physical dependence to Klonopin, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?

She explained that Klonopin can cause cognitive problems down the road. However, I talked to my family physician and she said that the same could be said for antidepressants.

At this point I am worse off then I was before I went to the *shrink*. Next appointment my psychiatrist will most likely be fired unless she begins to listen to what I'm trying to tell her. I don't want to end up agoraphobic again because of panic disorder. That is my worst fear of all.

I want to be a doctor. Because I know so many now who are just ******. They don't care about their patients and shrug off any feelings that are presented. All they do is prescribe medication which doesn't do **** or they diagnose the wrong disorder/disease. It's just ridiculous. And the thing is pills and chemicals don't always help someone. Exercise and meditation sounds like a way better stress relief since you have to build with those not just try to take a magic pill to make all the pain and anxiety go away. So how are you doing now?

You don't need a psyc if all she wants to do is give pills. Same boat here as you. Exercise and meditation have saved my life. I lost nine years of my life on that garbage. Looking at your nickname, quick comment; I've been to the main temple in Bangkok, wow.....there are no words... talk about a place to meditate. Good luck and remember, follow your heart.

Hi I can relate to this story, I have gone thru similar things, my therapist laughed at me when I told her I was raped and collapsed...there are so many different types of therapies and schools of thought about psychology not all of them work. keep an open mind to the meds. but a support group that is not too controlling really helped the best.

I can relate to lots of this story. I'm really disgusted by pill pushing psychiatrists and I really think a natural/psychological solution should be considered before pills but in reality pills are a quick fix and a first choice.
I'm so done with putting up with side effects and masking the problem. I don't think pills are right for me.
It's a shame that she didn't listen to you and people who are supposed to help you should most definitely take your concerns seriously and listen to what you have to say. You should definitely find someone who does this.

The shrink is getting fired. I already fired my counselor b/c she was no help either. Always suggesting that I need to find the "right" antidepressant to control my anxiety. Always wanting to pull me off Klonopin, which is not an easy drug to get off of.

I'm taking fall and winter wonderland walks to beat depression.

I'm sick of doctors playing with my mood via pills. At least my family physician is willing to give it a shot with just Klonopin and an exercise/meditation routine.

I really appreciate all of the supportive comments. I wish I had the money to take off for the Buddhist temple in Bangkok. However, I think a good dose of nature would do well. Someday I'll be able to make the trip. :)
