    I am glad I am not in a position to have to make that decision ,Its very confusing . But I do believe that;

    Government ... can’t be trusted to control its own bureaucrats or collect taxes equitably or fill a pothole, much less decide which of its citizens to kill.

    This is incredible. I spent hours on Christmas night thinking about Sacco and Vanzetti and the death penalty in America, and I couldn't understand why this subject had popped in my head all of a sudden.

      The coincidence. I mean, it´s not a subject I think about too often, or rather, I do but not at length as I did on Christmas night, and then a few hours later I read your story...

      I think that coincidences are somehow meant to be. Does that make sense?

    I am against the death penalty. It is not applied evenly, costs to much with all the mandatory appeals, and we still can execute the wrong person. One could make the argument that some people deserve the ultimate penalty, like cop killers, mass murderers, baby killers, but I prefer giving those people life rather than risking the killing of an innocent.

    What I don't get, the "right to life" people generally support the death penatly, that seems inconsistent.

      I agree with most of what you're saying, especially about how it's applied unevenly etc. When you say "right to life", are you talking about abortions? If so, I think those people consider the baby as being innocent - hence his right to live - and condemn criminals as having committed a crime which justifies their death. You're right though, it's utter nonsense and makes zero sense. How they feel they have a right to choose who does and does not have a right to life is beyond me.

      And Yet those who support abortion will oppose the dead penalty. How hypocritical. A beating heart is life weather it is 12 wks or 22 years. Personally I'm against abortion but I'm for the death penalty.

    I have to disagree I'm afraid!

    Take one of the many terrible cases in which a child is taken, raped, tortured and eventually killed. I would want nothing more than to see the culprit six feet under, and frankly a slow painful death wouldn't go amiss either.

    However if the wrong person is convicted, the consequences are of course terrible. Mind you this day and age I'm not sure we'd have problems with finding the correct culprit.

    Perhaps my need to see vengeance when such a terrible wrong is committed clouds my judgement... Either way the Death Penalty should be saved for the cruellest of crimes, and only when there is an overwhelming amount of evidence supporting the conviction.

      Hi. Ok, you have your opinion and I have mine but may I just say, you automatically bring up extreme cases (the child being tortured and killed). Yes, it's disgusting and there's something wrong with the person who committed the crime, I am in no way defending them, but what does it change to kill them? You answered it yourself : vengeance. And you merely say that's it's "terrible" if a person is falsely accused and sentenced to death. Do you know how hard it is to get a re-trial if you've received the death penalty? It takes forever. Basically, what I don't understand is how a person can decide that another should die and not question this.

      I think some people need the comfort of revenge, I personally would see the criminal's death and suffering (as cold as it sounds, I'm not evil!) as justice served. As you say, each to their own opinion. But you must also address the fact that the Death Penalty may act as an effective deterrent to those who would consider committing murder (or whatever offense grants the Death Penalty). I do agree however, that you cannot escape the fact that there is a chance of false accusation.

      It would be a deterrent if it was expedited. Better yet if everyone was armed in the US and when you had a bad guy break in to your home and you just shot the SOB . It would save everyone alot of money..
