I Am An Amputee
I had bone cancer when I was seventeen. The tumor was on the fibula of my left leg. They didn't amputate my leg, but they did give me 6,000 rads of radiation from the knee to the ankle. As a result of that, my leg sort of shriveled up and wasted away. When I was 32, I bought a new pair of high top Nike shoes , and I got a blister. The blister turned into a horrible, non-healing ulcer. The pain was horrible. I had skin grafts and hyperbaric therapy, but nothing worked, and I made the decision to amputate . The amputation had to be above the knee because of the condition of my lower leg. I had always known the day would come.
I've been an amputee for 19 years now. I have good insurance, and I wear an Otto Bock C-Leg. I've been in a socket with a Tec liner for many years. The new socket I just got is a suction socket. I was really looking forward to it, and it's been such a disappointment. I've had it a month, and it looks like I've already shrunk out of it. It's uncomfortable. They're working on a new liner, but who knows if it will work. You all know what I'm talking about.
