Well if we are to be a theocracy, I choose the cult of the glazed jelly donut.

Did you know "Focus on the Family" has their own zip code? Christian organizations have sooo much power in this country.

Prop 8 in CA, the one that bans gay marriage, was created by the Mormon Church.

Why can't they worry about themselves and leave everybody else alone?

It is basically just americans that refer to this as "the freest nation in the world." I was born in the US but grew up most of my life in Europe. In many ways, some of them are far more free. Watching the political/religious free for all this spring, all I want to do is move back to Europe.

Church and state are supposed to be separate in the US. Well according to people like Thomas Jefferson it should be anyway; according to him it was one of the founding principles of the USA. But what did he know.

Anyway, this was Thomas Jefferson's opinion on the matter (not that many US right wingers seem to care these days):

"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church and State."

I would add that, maybe, it just goes to show how screwed up the American religious right have become when it takes a nominal red coat like me to remind them of the principles on which their country was founded.

Oh they are just weird people thinking weird ways. The US has one of the most dangerous religiously-governed soil in the world.

In the 21st century, I believe that there should be no place for a religion in a democratic government's practice.
