As an outspoken Atheist in a community heavily weighted on the ideas of theism, I have to deal with a lot of criticism and so-called "debates".

One argument that particularly annoys me is the idea that Atheists "hate" god, particularly antitheists (a group with which I am very much affiliated). This is an idiotic concept. Atheism is defined as the absence of the belief in a higher deity or "god" as you so eloquently call it. We don't hate god anymore than we may hate Santa Claus or any other character derived from fiction. To say that we hate god is not only an insult to us, but also shows how little you actually know about Atheism.

I don't hate god, I hate religion and the belief in a so-called god. I have said this many times, and I'll say it again, the belief in god is illogical, irrational, childish, barbaric, and (to put it in a term you guys can understand [by you guys I am neither referring solely to Christians as is generally believed of me, I am referrig to all religions, be they monotheistic, polytheistic, or whatever the **** you'd call Scientology...I'll hold that for a later story]) it is idiotic.

60% of the time, it works everytime...

I love Anchorman.

Lol, good one, ag :P

probably more than 90%. i hope.

90% of the time, those who predict the end of the world are wrong.

Lol, Vendetta...fantastic, haha :P

Not often that someone is dim enough to proudly admit to being "a true nut case". Hopefully it's satirical. If not, the world will be a little less of a silly place once she kicks the bucket.

Honestly I don't think that'll happen, people ALWAYS come up with these little doomsday theories and are they ever correct? Judging by the fact that we are still here the answer is obviously no. Shows on the telly and magazine articles regarding and supporting the subject are only there to raise ratings and make money because they know that people eat that **** up.

Trust me ImoKurok, this is hardly my first nutcase posting, lol. I get about 25 a story.

Be careful ya all. Be very careful. Christians will kill your *** because you do not believe. Be advised I am a true nut case. Have ya all noticed all the "end of time" shows on TV lately?? It is coming folks. Another 3 years. It has been on History Channel, Science Channel and Discovery Channel. Just watch the TV and learn.
Am I incorrect believing this?? Darn if I know. I'm Just watchin TV. I have a very good and religious friend, she read all those "end of time books" I told her to watch the History Channel it verifies those idiot books.
Scary. So there you are your first nut case posting. I'm an old nut case too. 71 and holding.

Last I checked, it is the burden of proof lies with the person making the assertion. So all you theists - its up to you to prove god(s) exist. Its not up to me to prove he doesnt. It just wise of me not to believe you until you can prove your case.

I'm not saying people who believe are idiots, I'm saying it is an idiotic belief in the first place. While god has not been disproven, there is insurmountable evidence against religion.

So let's see if I have this straight: People who believe in God are idiots, and people who don't aren't. Despite you being unable to prove there is no God as much as they are unable to prove there is.

Well, I personally doubt calling people idiotic helps the situation in any case. Just saying.
Simple answer, yes.

Although I do not think this would ever happen, certainly not in my lifetime.

HAHA, CHPP, that's what I was thinking :P

HerbertSalter, I have always been a firm believer in the corruptability of humanity, let alone the atrocities it permits, and well they it may find something just as horrid to fuel wars and hate, don't you think it would be worth it to at least cure the world of one disease? Logic and reason can help this world, people just need to remove their blindfolds for it to begin.

That's interesting Godsmack666. Religion has indeed caused so much pain and hurt it would be easy to wish it never existed. In fact I would subscribe to that right now if I thought it would work.
If there was no religion what would replace it?

I think it's in our nature to want to believe in something. Also I think it's in our nature to challenge others beliefs.

But to your point, the biggest horror stories of all our histories can be derived through to religion, and to some point I would say that makes me dispise such worship.

Godsmack: As a parent you become all the fictional characters. I am Santa. I am the Easter Bunny. I am the Tooth Fairy and the Bottle Fairy. So I may as well be god too.

Valid point, but as I've said time and time again, religion is a poison to the world and in all logic and reason should not be allowed to "strike again."

I take your point, and sympethise with you.
An atheist, I feel has every right to believe there is no God.
However, using the same logic Atheists must also agree that many people do believe in a God, diety, whatever. That's when it gets interesting.

Lol, why does the other side comment while I'm asleep? it doesn't give me a chance to make fun of them, haha

AtheistMom, you ARE better than god (yay to be better than a character as fictional as the tooth fairy) I could have told you that :P

PassionateGardener, divine intervention? Are you sure you didn't just drop too much acid?

FroggsRule, if Jesus lived in my heart I would likely cut it out, otherwise the zombie infection may spread.

Last I checked, good parent's didn't play favorites. God is suppose to be the ultimate parent - so why the hell is he playing favorites. Doesn't seem like a godly thing to do. ****, Im a better parent than that....I guess that means Im better than god.

Amen, Anotherhuman!

God says we should love all people, therefore I think those Christians you said called you names were not living fully by what we preach. It isn't our place to judge you for your beliefs or anything else.

But we do, however, see it a bit as our 'duty', if you will, to tell everyone about the Love of Jesus. It's just some of us go about it the wrong way and often times come off as being pushy. We just want to share with the world how great it is to have Jesus in your heart.

Godfree, I couldnt agree with you more. I disagree with religion, I debate religion, I point out the problems with religion. I dont give two ***** about god(s) because they dont exist. I dont debate Zeus or Baal; Im not going to debate the Xtian god, Allah, or Yahweh either.

I so agree, the time I spend trashing god is insignificant compared to the time I spend trashing religion.
There is no god, period. But there is religion and it is a force for division, hatred, ignorance and abuse. It must be exposed and destroyed.

Yeah, I dont get the Mormons or the Scientologists. They're a bunch of crack pots. I dont know how they can close their eyes to obvious falsehoods. But what do I know?

No need to apologise, I love to hear different perspectives and hearign different stories of things people have had to endure because they can see logic and reason. Like I've said in the past, theists are hypocrits to their very bone. They preach love and forgiveness until they learn that you don't agree with their religion, which is perfectly exemplified by your story. It always makes me smiile to hear people talk about how they've overcome this senseless discrimination.

Thank you for the comment :)

I was raised Catholic, but decided when I was in HS that all this religion was crap anyways. I have been called everything in the book by bible thumping hypocrites. My favorite was when I was a soldier and a higher ranking soldier called me the "anti-christ" because he asked me what I believe, naturally I said "What do I believe? That there is no god or gods," upon which he gasped and almost fainted. Southern baptist black guy.

My mother gives me crap all the time, hoping one day I will find god again, that when my son was born I should have seen that god is real. No, what I saw was the miracle of life. The miracle of what 2 people can do when they get alone and don't use a condom. I am going to raise my son with moral values that I learned from Catholicism but with the right to make his own choice. My wife is Catholic, believes in god and all that, and she would like him raised that way. That's fine, but don't expect me in church.

I just love it though, when the accepting and open arms of religious turn blood red and vicious if you say you don't believe, or are not of their faith. Muslims hate all non-muslims *or so they say their book says*, Christians hate Jews, Jews...well have had a horrible run over the centuries, so on and so forth. Religion breeds hate, segregation, and a false sense of security. This life is supposed to be filled with adventure, wisdom, learning, growing, and enjoyment...instead due to the unwielding of religion and other things we are pinned to desks all day, or to the all mighty power of the economic god, the dollar. I have enjoyed my life so far, im only 24 i hope I have more to live, but working my entire life until I retire *fat chance of that ever happening now* just seems wrong. But laying my fate to religion...screw that.

I am so bored, sorry I went on and on.

Haha, thank you :)

I like the way you look at things :P "I am right. End of story." That's awesome.

I agree with both concepts: They can't understand because they have been brainwashed and blindfolded to the point that they can't see past their own flawed thought processes. They won't understand because they won't turn their back on the fallacy that is god out of fear of punishment. Sad really.

That movie is incredibly possible, but the thing is logic and reason is indeed spreading across the world. Nonbelievers are growing in number and faster rates than this world has ever seen.

Our consciousness may have to evolve, or expand at the very least. Logic simply needs to spread.

That's because we Atheists are evil and should show ourselves for what we are, devil's with books *rolls eyes*

Someone in my community said that to me and I was just floored by the complete lack of intelligence that this person showed.

Society just isn't ready yet, the time will come though. Not soon, but eventually.

Haha, very well put CHPP :)

It amazes me how the world is A-okay with some religious zealot/adherent putting out their views on the subject (be it in a pamphlet, flyer, or book) but when one atheist does the world basically "rallies the troops" to bring an end to the propaganda BS. Hypocrisy, thy name is religion.

Thought is always appreciated. We dispute, but we in no way go to the length that the religious do in order to convert. We use our words and logic, as Richard Dawkins put, "We merely attempt to spread consciousness." It is the religious sects that fly planes into buildings, commit genocides, and partake in all-out-warfare for the reason that there are people who don't believe in THEIR god.

We dispute, they kill and brainwash.

Sigh, that is most likely true. In any case, this will most certainly not happen in our lifetimes. At the moment it is nothing more than a pipedream...one which I look at fondly.

I agree Groumd, fear of death plays a MAJOR role in the continued belief in god. However, if religious adherents could see things from our point of view, they may change their mind. The concept that THIS IS IT is one which adds so much meaning to life that is otherwise lost.

Sadly, religion is very real. God is the fiction. Religion is simply the belief in these ideas...and it is all-powerful right now, as it has been through basically the entirety of human history.

AtheistMom: Thank you very much :) Remember the famous South Park song in which Mormonism is explained: "Joseph Smith was called a prophet...dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb" haha

Hell puns are appreciated, along with any other puns :) I agree, for me Christianity is one of the worst, along with the other Judaic Religions (Islam and Judaism).

I have always loved the biblical story of Moses at Mount Sinai. He showed his adherents the apparent "Ten Commandments" (given to him by god) stating ideas such as don't kill, don't cheat, and don't steal. It's funny to me that this group of people (as well as the rest) wouldn't have known that these things aren't "good" without the intervention of god (let alone the old testament god which was seemingly unfamilliar with these concepts as can be seen in his many "deeds") Had they thought that way they likely would not have made it to the mountain itself, they would have killed and raped eachother (although it has been deduced by a majority of archeaologists that this event never even occured in the first place). In fact, these ideas were quite well known. King Hammurabi (a leader of an early Mesopotamian Empire) coined the philosophy of "an eye for an eye" in his legal system known as "Hammurabi's Code." This was the first ever legal system developed in any civilization and (although the eye for an eye idea is flawed) it described many of the "don'ts" of the commandments as crimes, many of which were punishable by death. Religion in no way holds the exclusive rights to morality, in fact it impedes it.

ROFLMA - at your last sentence. That was GRREAT!! I love your stories.

Its amazing how any crack-pot-nut-job can create a new religion (cult) as long as he has charisma and is a good salesman. Im referencing both Scientology and Mormonism here.

I would have to say, I do like the stories of Zeus, Ba'al, Santa, the Easter Bunny, Mother Goose, and even Winnie the Pooh a whole hell of a lot better than the Xtian god. (sorry for the hell pun...I couldn't help myself.)

Religion separates people and breeds hatred and fear. It skews our views regarding morality and scientific findings. It is an abomination to our world and needs to be stopped, otherwise consciousness, logic, rationality, and overall intelligence will suffer, along with the countless human beings who merely don't believe.

I cried too, mainly because the giant, throbbing candy cane in his pocket made me uncomfortable (kidding) lol

I know, they swoop in, spew their jargon (dropping countless expletives and calling us names), tell us they fear for our souls, and then they block us before we even check our inboxes. This is immaturity at its finest. What is the point of saying something with no intention of backing it up or at the very least allowing the other side their right to a rebuttal. Not only is that the Christian style, but it is the Islamic style (perfectly exemplified by the way they attacked the Danish Cartoonist who made a very funny comic depicting their oh so holy prophet, Muhammad) as well as every other religion that has surface since the birth of mankind's ignorance.
