Breaking Connection

I'm wondering if someone hurts your feelings bad enough will it break your empath tie to them. My mom knows my son and I need her help to pay our house payment. She deserted me when I was a child and I told her if she did it again she can forget my son and me. She would be out of our lives forever. Last night she threatened to desert us again. The thought that my mom could just throw us away hurt so bad. Today I don't feel anything from her. It's like the connection I had with her is broken. I'm wondering if that's possible.
