Overdrawn Environmental Account - Ours

A personal story in the experience: I Am An Environmentalist
I stumbled on this website today and it puts so eloquently the information I have been trying to communicate to family and friends and anyone else who will listen...the facts of the matter about how we, as a species, are depriving our own future generations of the wonders of nature that we currently enjoy.

http://www.footprintnetwork.org/gfn_sub.php?content=overshoot

We are all contributors...every time I buy food, drive to work, buy clothes (new) or anything like that, I now have this sense of guilt about the impact I am having on the world.  I have made a vow to stop buying from China (or most other countries except perhaps Mexico and Canada) only because of the cost of transportation of those goods.  The cheap price is unrealistic if you consider the cost of materials, labor and transportation.

I have a goal of eating only food grown within 100 miles of my location (see this site; http://100milediet.org/)

I have a goal of being able to walk or bicycle to work or to find a car that can use biodiesel and to create that fuel myself or with others in my local area.  Or to find an electric powered car (where does the electricity come from?  Can I get enough sun to use solar?) But my right now life doesn't accomodate those goals.  I have kids to feed and a vehicle that uses gas.

I am not alone.  There are not many of us (in the world) that can say that they live a life that would not contribute to the overpaced consumption of the world's resources.  It saddens me especially because I have children, neices and nephews who will have to deal with the consequences of a long chain of human history that led us to their future.

It is simple to take care of our environment. Don't use more than you need. Exercise instead of using machines for every little thing you do. DO NOT throw your garbage out your car window. I have seen people throwing garbage from their fishing boats into the water of clear lakes. Just about every day I find MacDonald's and other wrappers onmy land that people have discarded. People are real pigs - not the kind I raise but PIGS.

I really do wish it were that simple. But I do agree with you - humans are careless and thoughtless. If they had to live in a space capsule about the size of a small VW bug for 6 months, I wonder how they would handle their trash?

I too worry about the future for our children. The website about Earth Overshoot is a sobering reality check. Thank you for sharing it here.

I too, am appalled by the amount of trash
I generate everyday that has to go to the
landfill. I hope that by buying more fresh
fruit, vegetables and meat, rather than the
packaged varieties, I can help to cut the stream
of waste materials that get burial.

As far as buying things from China, it's hard
not to when so much of everything these days,
is made there (my notebook PC, for example).

I'm looking for a bargain, because I don't
have a "U.S. government job" that overpays its
workforce unrealistically. I'm self employed and
depend on others who realize my true value, as
a source of income. I can't afford to waste anything.
