Keep Your Compliments

I am always so shocked when someone I think I'm getting along with says something like "Why are you so white-washed?" I've heard that, or a variation of that statement so many times now that it really shouldn't surprise me anymore. A co-woker once said that I was so well-spoken that she sometimes forget that I'm Black, and that was a compliment as far as she was concerned. She at least had the grace to pretend to be embarrassed when I pointed out just why that was offensive, in my experience, most people don't.

Why people think that way, I assume most of the people who said that to you are black ,right? Something is rooted in their mind, I guess, the outcome of the old tradition? Why 'well-spoken English' should be a matter to them? Apologize, but I think that is absurd. Fortunately, we don't have this issue in my country.Even, can be regarded as reverse ,people admire you if you can speak English well.

As a latina, I can relate to what you are saying. I have been faced with the same thing each and everyday --- keep doing what you do and don't be anyone's stereotype !!! success is your best revenge !
