Misunderstood Atheism

why is it as soon as you proclaim atheism a million people come down on you and start throwing judgments at you(metaphorically). A lot of atheists are very different atheists to not commit to another belief the "belief" is instead misbelief in a God/subsequent phrase or person. We are instead free thinking beings by not committing ourselves to a biased religion or culture we allow ourselves to view the universe much more open minded. I don't hate religion, undersatnd its importance in the past and the culture it carrys with it but instead of believing it i can embrace that essence without all the crap that comes with it. Now i said "a lot of atheists are very different" because some are also quite similar, very similar, quite different etc My view on life and reality are individual to myself(despite the poetic 3rd person above) although quite probably based on things around me and in dreams.

    There was a national survey conducted a few years back where the question asked was " who would you have your daughter marry?" They then listed various minority and racial groups such as Blacks, Hispanics, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, atheists etc.



    Not surprising Atheists are amongst the most reviled minority group in this country.

    I can completely relate. There seems to be a common misconception that being atheist also means you automatically hate all forms of religion. While it is true that some atheist do hate religion, these views vary as much as people do. It may help to realize though (most likely you have) that people are defensive by nature. When you tell someone you're atheist, they understand it as saying that you think their beliefs (which they probably hold very dear) are a complete farce. Naturally this will strike a cord with them. So next time, try not to feel offended and ask that they respect your beliefs (or lack thereof) just like you respect theirs.
