I was going to reply with a comment similar to destry's. I don't know... there are two sides to me. The one that has been forever changed by society and the one that holds my dreams.
That would be nice, but I wonder if too many people are just too shallow, narcissistic or just plain ignorant to such problems to ever make that kind of difference. For instance, where I live, the "fun" thing to do (bleh) on the weekends is to take the ATV or dirtbike out to rip around making all kinds of pollution, destroying vegetation, making noise pollution, etc. They just don't care.
Something that makes me more angry than the spill itself is the response to the spill. People assume that "the other person" will help take care of the problem. And the people who say, "Ohh, you don't want to go *over there* right now." in response to my comments of wanting to help.
The 'high-grading' has come to an end. We have picked all the low hanging fruit, even tossing the bruised or wormy stuff away. Oil, metals, coal, timber, food. All the 'easy' stuff is gone - at least here in the US.
It IS depressing, but it is reality. Teachin your children right is a good step to take. Teach em to conserve, to grow, to cook, clean an can.
An for your own sake, please remember that the best you can do will still be the best you can do.
But we won't. The kids today, for the most part, are being brought up to covet everything. They have no idea. There are so many that just care about money, that the planet and humans are inevitably doomed... :(
I am hoping that enough people are getting fed up that some real change happens. The pursuit of oil and energy, in general, is raping the planet and destroying subcultures and ecosystems that will harm us in ways we don't even realize yet.
I look at my own home though and the explosion of devices, laptops, game systems, power adapters, i-things, cellphones, etc is incredible.
I think we should have rolling blackouts and coordinated power savings efforts.
I think we need to begin living as if there is no oil or gas left as much as we can.
I think the government should continue to subsidize energy efficient replacement strategies for homeowners and business
I think big oil industry will not go down without a fight and we are at the leading edge of the war against the oil companies.
well, helping in a little way is better than not caring at all. I am sure there are people out there who don't even know what is going on....
They just don't care about the environmental impact of what they do, scoobs. They are most likely more worried about all the lost revenue from the spilling oil. :-/
It reminds me of what Big Oil has done to my province. The greed for it has destroyed a good part of what used to be beautiful. Tailing ponds, deforestation, massive pollution of water and air.... check it out...
I feel bad because I depend on my vehicle to get me to any amenities. I just have to drive and there is no way around it. I do try to limit my trips and try to get everything at once, though. And I walk the boys to school most days.
It is very sad... and it happens all the time, too. I can only do so much... I pity the animals that get greased up because of it... so I buy Dawn to save the wildlife... hoping it helps... even in a little way... *hugs*...
You know... had I led a different life, I would not have minded joining Greenpeace...
