where a child sex attack takes place every 20 MINUTES

About 23,000 children were reported victims in England and Wales during 2010/11 but fewer than 10 per cent of cases ended in a conviction
  • Six times as many reported offences were committed against girls compared to boys
  •
  • NSPCC said a major effort was needed to protect children and boost conviction rates

One child sex attack was reported every 20 minutes last year, equivalent to 444 attacks a week, according to shocking police figures released today.

About 23,000 children were reported victims in England and Wales during 2010/11 but fewer than 10 per cent of cases ended in a conviction.

There were 4,973 alleged victims aged ten and under, including 1,472 younger than six.

The statistics, obtained by the NSPCC in a freedom of information request, cover rape, ****** and child prostitution across all 43 police forces in England and Wales - the figures shown on this map include sex offences against boys and girls in 2011

The 'City of London' is a tiny area within London which has its own police force independent of the Met. It covers only one square mile, hence the solitary offence

And six times as many reported offences were committed against girls as against boys.

The statistics, obtained by the NSPCC in a freedom of information request, cover rape, ****** and child prostitution across all 43 police forces in England and Wales.

The charity said a major effort was needed to protect children and boost conviction rates.

A spokesman said: ‘The Government has to start treating the situation as seriously as they would if faced with an outbreak of chronic disease.’

More than a third of all sex crimes are committed against children with more than 60 child sex offences reported to police every day., figures showed today.

Overall, there were 54,982 sex offences last year, including 23,097 against children, the figures showed.

Most of the children (14,819) were aged between 11 and 17, including 8,749 aged 13 to 15.

Britain's biggest force, the Metropolitan Police, received the highest number of reports (3,420), followed by the forces in Thames Valley (1,264) and West Yorkshire (1,170).

Jon Brown, head of the NSPCC's sexual abuse programme, said: 'A concentrated effort has to be made if we are to start reducing this distressing level of offences, many of which are committed on extremely young and helpless children.

'When you have a situation where more than 60 children are being sexually abused every day, something is very wrong.

'The Government has to start treating the situation as seriously as they would if faced with an outbreak of chronic disease.'

He went on: 'We also need a clearer picture of what is happening between an offence being reported and someone appearing in court.

'The police are doing their best to bring prosecutions but we need to understand why there is such a huge disparity between the two figures.

'It requires a major effort from Government and the public to give children the protection they need and to provide more therapeutic programmes so the young victims of abuse can start to rebuild their lives.'

I just can't understand why such people, fully aware of their "problem", can't readjust by a small measure to ensure that their sexual target is "of age".
How can one establish a real friendship with a "minor"? There are sao few points of verbal connection.
It defeats me.
At the same time as one who never watches TV in the early morning the first time i switched at those early times, on Saturdays in particular, I saw how youngsters - and I mean YOUNG - were being relentlessly targeted by advertisers, revving them up to demand... I think that's also obscene and without conscience.

when binladen attacked America they sent armies over to get him but yet they don't act when children are attacked by these vile people how does that work.

our governments are to soft with these sick people who destroy childrens lives they should shoot them dead and send a message to these sick people that we will not tolerate this behaviour anymore enough is enough time to get tough with these evil people who care only for themselves.

God loves the children more than anything. He said ,for such is the kingdom. God will deal with this one day and the people that hurt children will have eternity to think about it painfully.

these are absolutely disgusting statistics,

damn shame ..
Have a loved one suffering now from the effects.
Its heartbreaking and it infuriates me to no end,
shes a lovely girl whose been devastated and carries the wounds and scars to this day.
the number of victim since 2000 mark a quarter million

I wanted to say, but it seems someone else feels the same. It is also quite obvious by some comments on EP. THE MAJORITY OF ABUSE OCCURS IN THE HOME!!!! This is a place where the young should feel SAFE. I look at my adoptive grandaughter, 16mths old, feeling so very protective and knowing she is safe. What of the ones who do not have the adult protection??

Don't forget most children are abused in their homes by their parents or carers.

this is horrible and very shocking thankyou for reporting this I did not know there were so many sick people out there .you need to keep a eye on your children and talk to them too.
