I Am English And Proud Of It.I was born in England(Lincolnshire).
Both my parents are/were English(Oxford & Newcastle).
All four grandparents were English(Maternal- Leeds & Norfolk, Paternal- Newcastle & Newcastle)
Beyond that it becomes a bit murky, Scottish and Irish ancestry. The Irish comes from my father's side, though he always claimed to be 4th generation English. We have always been a bit of a mongrel nation, but with common values and shared destiny. Maybe that is why we are fairly tolerant and able to laugh at ourselves. We also generally accept and integrate immigrants reasonably well.
It is very difficult to put our finger on just what makes us English. Perhaps our fashion sense, or our cuisine(neither of which are the envy of the world). Perhaps others have suggestions as to what makes us what we are.
Here are some things that the world does envy us for.
Our literary heritage.
Our Architecture(think of our great cathedrals).
The Royal Family.
Our scientific achievements(for a small country we are very inventive).
The empire(i know it was British, not just English). I have been to Kenya a couple of times and several locals wished that they could go back to colonial times.
Our drama and theatrical achievements. After all the play "Warhorse" is shortly going to Broadway.
I would be interested to hear other people's views on this.
