My Path Chose Me

S ince childhood, I was always THE ONE who people came to when in sincere emotional need - and I filled it somehow... and I liked it.  Since childhood I've always been politically active in human rights / civil rights causes - not by choice so much as by "calling".... and now as I sit at my Volunteer Director desk at one of the nonprofits I serve.... (starving I might add).... I think and smile - it's my fate to be in the service of others - whether anyone cares to remember me or not.... It is my calling. I'm finishing up my doctorate in clinical psychology and I'm working mostly with individuals who have survived extended torture life-histories, severe mental illness, and neurological challenges.... I love it.... (and I'm starving I add again).... Not many severely mentally ill individuals have good paying jobs so those who serve them, must adapt to the two food groups left in the nutritional pyramid - Rice and Beans. Despite the poverty - it's a good life. One very important aspect of my life that has shown me how much my fate is solidified, is the birth and wonderful adventure I've had with my 15 year old son who lives with autism and cognitive delay - I know he chose me.... and I am forever humbled and grateful.  So, part of me hopes someone out there will take it upon themselves to throw a dime in one of the nonprofits I serve www.bigskyfarm.4t.com or www.newlifetexas.org  or just feel compelled to share their experience of Devotion.  Many thanks to you for reading.
