Where Did It All Go?

I was in the Navy, 1974 to 1980. The place I went to boot camp, NTC Orlando FL is now a residential neighborhood. My first duty station, NAVSECGRUACT Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico - no longer exists. The ship I served on until my EAOS was cut up and sold for scrap. About the only vestiges remaining of my service are the D&S Piers in NORVA, the school command at NTC GLAKES (I went to ET school there), and the Naval Station at Roosevelt Roads in PR, where I visited many times during my tour in PR. It's like they wiped away almost every trace that I'd ever been there...but my memories. They can't take those away. I remember nights at sea on the weatherdecks at darken ship...how MANY stars you can see after your eyes adjust to the darkness. I remember how CLEAN the air smelled...and going through the tail end of a hurricane off Mayport FL, the Persian Gulf Yacht Club (you don't want to know, beleive me..), and just last month I realized it had been THIRTY YEARS since my EAOS. Man, did THAT ever make me feel old...

I know how you feel. I was in the same boat as well, my ships are gone the ba<x>se I was stationed on is a corporate park, my squadron disbanded. The russians are not our Foe any more and there are women on all ships.
