It's easy to get ripped off by a vet if you don't know what's going on. I'd suggest educating yourself on the most common issues that can happen to your pet(s) whether they be cats, dogs, or both. If you know what an epiphyseal plate is, for instance, you'll know what to expect the vet to charge you for to repair it when your young dog accidentally knocks one loose. Or you'll know what it means when your cat's third eyelid isn't retracting all the way, and you'll have a general idea what it will take to fix it. You don't have to become a professional, but some reading and referencing might be very useful.

Greed has become the way of everything. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE hipocratic oath that says these Doctors will treat you even if you dont have the means to pay. The heart has gone out the window and the pocketbook is buldging.

Not all vets are bad... The one I go to doesn't charge for anything you don't need, doesn't overcharge, is always helpful, and explains things very well. Let's clump them all together and make the good vets look bad and me look bad for wanting to be one, hm? It's like complaining about doctors fees... it costs for care. You can't expect it to be free.

Yep. People try to make you feel like an irresponsible pet owner if you don't lay out buckets of $ for everything they need. Sometimes you just can't; it doesn't mean you don't love your animals.

I agreed to help a friend who had left the country, by fostering her two kitties until she either came back or made arrangements for getting them. It's turned into an indefinite thing, and I've had to take one to the vet twice for serious stuff. Ouch - nearly $500 so far.

Not to mention my other cats and the dog.

I was fortunate enough to find a small town vet who would work with me... But, that was, of course, before I moved from Nebraska to Iowa. I really haven't found a vet I like yet, here in Iowa, for my two ratties or my cat, but at least I've found one that I can call with my concerns, who will give me an honest answer when I need one.

Its sad. And, its true. They prey on people like us. I, TOO have been taken by BANFIELD. Their charges are rediculous. I spent over $300 on a wild kitten that I could have had the same things done at the Humane Society here for about $40. I notice they add charges for stupid little things that make no sense. When I had a dog in a different hospital for a few days, it only costed me about $120. I wasn't complaining. They are true ripoffs. They kept taking the $ out of my checking acct when my year contract was up, then they say I am not getting my money back for being over charged, that it was in FINE print in the contract. WHO REALLY READS ALL THAT FINE PRINT??????????

    I'll never go there again.

I know what you mean. I have three great danes and three cats. My first dane got bone cancer the treatments were way beyond anything i could afford and i had to have her put down. I cried for three days.

Animal groups want more and more people to adopt pets but people can't afford to have them. It is sad but those of us who love or pets have our hands tied to keep from giving warm loving homes to more of them.
