German And ProudI am 1st generation German my father met my mother in 1946 just after the war while doing his national service in Hanover. Like the English my mother was moved to the countryside before the bombing at the age of 12 she had no siblings and never knew her other relatives. Her mother died in 1986 at the age of 82, her father was sent to Kiev as an engineer and spoke fluent Russian he came home for a few weeks towards the end of the war but sent back when Hitler drafted every able bodied person to the Russian front. It’s rumoured that his train was attacked by Russian fighter planes just inside Russia she never heard from him again.
