Interesting... I had heard that the UK had a huge issue with binge drinking/emergency room visits but I didn't realize it was this high (8/10 visits). I HAD heard it was causing a strain on emergency rooms, however.

Alcohol abuse causes a lot of issues, but it ticks me off that binge drinking takes up so many emergency resources. So many self indulgent kids...I suppose when there are no consequences (you don't have to directly pay for your emergency visit) why would you stop?

As well, my background is European and many countries do not have this problem as their attitude towards alcohol is completely different (it's generally enjoyed in moderation). A lot of this goes to parenting... some parents have no idea where their kids are at all hours.

A lot of clubs don't help... cheap drink/shot specials and people load up. There is a decided lack of personal responsibility that accompanies this. I wonder if at least charging for emergency visits when it's determined to be self inflicted binge drinking would have any positive effect.

The problem with alcohol stems from parents not doing their jobs and teaching their kids that drinking is okay IN MODERATION. All of the high schools in the US teach alcohol abstinence, but it just doesn't work. Teenagers still abuse alcohol all over the place. If you restrict something like that, it will make it easier for the government to take control over other things. It is a straight and narrow road to a government system called Totalitarianism.

I often get tickled at the way we refuse to legalize pot...even though it helps with a wide variety of medical conditions...and alcohol and cigarettes remain legal. This truly boggles my mind. Last time I checked...alcohol (except for maybe a glass of red wine per day) or cigarettes are not good for the human body when abused...and drive up medical costs substantially in multiple countries each year. I would love to see alcohol restricted...as well as cigarettes for that matter...but there is so much controversy surrounding this topic...I wonder if I will ever see something like this occur in my lifetime. It would be nice...but I'm not holding my breath.

This was an good read. Thanks for posting.

I was watching a documentary about the history of illegal drugs in America. At least their own opinion was an argument that alcohol was the white persons drug of choice where as outlawing other drugs was mainly targeted against immigrants of minority races.

Google "The prohibition in USA" . It was severly restricted in the 1920's/30's in the US and it was a disasterous social experiment. Wonderful sentiment but impractical.

rubbish, alcohol was banned in the 1920's/30's and it didnt work, because of corruption in government etc, it has never been restricted properly, if we had a willing government that saw the mess alcohol caused society, and put a bit of thought into putting restrictions in place, we would have less social problems and still have freedom to drink. Sadly as the voters keep voting in fools, we will never see this happening

OK this one I agree with you on. Alcohol is just as bad as some drugs, its such a major issue in society, the damage it does to individuals, families and the community. The problem is it's still so socially accepted if you ban or even put restrictions on it, people are probably just going to want to do it more.(esp teenagers). I don't know what the answer is though.... More education???

no education is no good if you don't curb the access to people, banning will never happen or is it the right thing to do, but putting on restricted sales is the answer if done by a government willing to achieve change. Sadly we don't have a government with any sense never mind a willingness for change

We here in America tried to ban alcohol and it caused more problems than it solved. It doesn't work. In fact, we should legalize the other drugs.

no banning wont work, hense my idea above, it has to be tightly restricted, but there has to be a will by the government or it will never work, unfortunately the government in most countries couldn't care less.

legalizing other drugs makes about as much sense as reducing the age of consent to 10 yrs old, just because a section of society feels its a good idea, doesn't make it the right thing to do.
