Lol, so easy to say when you're not poor. Do you spend money trying to get a job, taking the bus places, or do you eat that day? Have you ever chosen between milk OR cereal? Do you know what it's like to be hungry? What would you do if you were starving, and a job wouldn't pay you, even if you got one, for two weeks? Btw, poor people work harder than anyone else. That's just a fact. And they do it for a lot less money. Also, there's a difference between the poor and people who do anything for themselves. So simplistic to say they just need to help themselves, lol. It's hard to get up on time for a job when you sleep under a bridge, have no shower to wash the filth off of yourself, and no money to get there. Would you hire someone like that?

You're right. Most of them want to help themselves. Most of them work harder than you (or I) probably ever have in your life. Given half a chance they don't squander it. Most of them are more generous than the wealthy. If you've ever sat down and listened, deeply, to the world's poorest, you find certain themes come through all the time. And the biggest one is powerlessness. People who have lived with more choices struggle to comprehend what that means.

you have to be kidding. Do you really think poor people don't help themselves all they can? the trouble is that they have absolutely no power so that the rich and powerful keep them poor. Of course there is more to it but it is very difficult to get out of poverty.

So those more fortunate than them don't have to?

Are all poor people poor because they don't "help themselves" enough?

Is the world really that simple?

She is trying to simplify a complicated situation.

To what end?

Well, if the poor are to blame for being poor, then the rest of us don't have to do anything.

Do you think that's true?

Of course not, another one of us can fall on hard times, there are several things or situation that can contribute, I guess the obvious one is Family break up, I heard of a Police man, his wife left him, he couldn't deal with it, started drinking lost his job and house and became a tramp on the street.
We all need help from time to time because we are our brother's keeper and no man is an island, there is no such thing as self made.

I couldn't agree with you more.

I'm reminded of this zinger from (where else) the Glenn Beck show, actor Craig T. Nelson: "I've been on foodstamps and welfare, did anyone help me out? No."

So I apologise, I completely misread you. She is trying to oversimplify something complex - a very right wing thing to do.

rich or poor people need to help people.

How exactly do you think they are going to do that?

People need to help themselves, whatever their circumstances. Always try to improve your lot in life.

Are you now, or have you ever been poor?
