Goth Since 1981 And Proud To Welcome You All!

It really saddens me when I read the stories written by members of this group who are under 35... you have no concept of what it is all about...
we were lost children!... it was a time when the cold war raged and the threat of nuclear annihilation was palpable!... we were told over and over to regard the Doomsday Clock ... just imagine how frightened and hopeless we felt... we were a class of underachievers because there was no point to getting the big degrees or high paying jobs but instead to stoke our collective creative fires... painting a vivid picture now huh?...
We imagined ourselves as dark things trapped in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass... perhaps we we too clever and smart for our own well being... we couldn't just carry on as though this was going to be all right... the clothes and the music illustrated how we felt on the inside to those around us... Grafter, Siouxie, Bauhaus, Skinny Puppy, Front 242, Sisters of Mercy... you get the picture, the list goes on and on...
We didn't want to exclude ANYONE who felt as we did... there was so little understanding or caring about the world that we clung to one another, attempting to feel safe... we weren't trying to change the world... we really just wanted to dance and express ourselves... we took a lot of abuse for it but never wavered because, given half a chance, we could explain what we were trying to say... sometimes the other listened and could grasp it but other times the people were so obtuse educating them was futile

So please, stop acting superior and pretentious ... if a younger "Gothling" isn't well informed about that which came before, educate don't castrate {oops, I meant castigate...funny though}... stop trying to tell everyone what constitutes Goth or not... everything must evolve or become extinct

*NO IDEA WHAT 'GOTH' IS*
Sooo Goth is a bunch of a people with no hope for the future who like to wear black and mime makeup? I read someones comment about it becoming commericalized: It happened with the hippies, it happened to the environmentalists and now its happening with the goths.
All I ever see is a bunch of 10-15 year olds, all dressed in skin tight clothes, smoking cigs and complaining about how the world isnt fair.

It makes me sad when people have to be ubergoth and try to one up each other. Lets just coexsist..There arent that many of us anyway (at least not in the southeast where I live!) and this weird Civil War some of us try to rage on others of our kind is really pointless. We really should stick together and educate and accept the younger generation.

I have to say, while perhaps not older than 35....I've been into the goth scene/lifestyle since the early 90s....and I praise you for your post. :D

Kid these day!!! :-)

Because 'goth' is more like a fashion club ba<x>sed on hair and consumer culture, rather than music i kind of drifted away from it. Tragic.. not. Anyway, i'm seventeen and listen to things like bauhaus, the cure, joy division, nick cave, speciman.. i think the music is choked,defiant ,repressed and brooding and lovley, and remains relevent to our society in which is in turmoil as much as it was then. We didn't live through the effects cold war, nor do we beleive in doomsday clock piffle.. however, we live in chronic suburban apathy. Most cultures are not driven by the people, but by media, vanity, and consumerism. The few scenes that exsist are so far down beneath the radar that the 'underground' is considered above it. There is no smell of revolution in the air, we.. the youth are controled and stifled... that is repression.

:D I really liked this. I mean, I guess I "shouldn't", because I am only 15, but I do. I really appreciate how important it is to you, and I agree. I used to do a lot of research on this, and I completely understand where you're coming from. (Well, maybe not completely...but I try at least.) Thank you so much for your post, it's so frusterating seeing others my age rushing into hot topic then regarding themselves as "goth". And so many of us just try so hard not to try XD as in, going out of their way to make it appear more as though they don't care. So i just thought I'd contribute that...
(I don't claim to be goth...anymore...used to, i'm sorry to say...because i really had no idea...but i can see that you know already. :P)

Thank u mrcrimson !... U r absolutely correct about feeling somehow related to the punks...afterall, that's who spawned us!...the punks, teds, rude boys, rockabillies...anyone who felt off the grid, all were welcome...and it's not like we didn't care it's just that we didn't see any point to aspire as that looming death was so near...
I have no issue with anyone who are compelled to follow any of those movements...just know why and where u came from and have respect...that seems to be the bit that is missing...oh yeah, and manners {tee hee}
