Yeah, my mom did the same, except she didn't want to because she was afraid of teaching us wrong, but they way I look at it is, well, atleast I'd know some then!

So am I!!! I've tried Cantonese but I just can't find the time. Well, I think China's becoming wealthier now a days.

It might come in handy one day. Especially if you're planning to find some market in china.

Sorry about the weather, but you're almost certainly still better off in England - unless your dad is a Communist bigwig, for example.

Learning a "heritage" language is fantastic for its own sake, though, and I wish you every success with it.

Good to know that you care about your root to want to learn the language.

The reason my elders didn't want to teach me, or even speak the language (Mandarin), was a little scarier though. The Chinese in my country were seen as communists and thus it was best to hide out heritage.

Nowadays it's promised to us that we'll no longer suffer from discrimination but well, I'll take it with a grain of salt.

The language is beautiful though and I think you'll admire the art behind every character!
