Corps Member Courtney Woolverton Takes the Lead In Early Childhood.
Courtney Woolverton (Corps ’06), who teaches pre-kindergarten to special needs children at Tilden School in Oakland, knows that the achievement gap starts before kindergarten and that the early years have a profound impact in a child’s life trajectory. Although there are currently no pre-kindergarten standards in the state of California, Courtney has done extensive research to create and employ an ambitious curriculum which she adapted from a new state-mandated assessment for preschoolers with special needs—the Desired Results Developmental Profile ( DRDP). Despite the skill range and functional challenges Courtney’s students face, currently, 87% of her special needs students are on track to mastering all of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals.
