I Was, Years Ago (4)

4. Budding Friendship

So after the photoshoot, Miles and I became almost inseparable. He would often give me lifts home from school, claiming that he wanted to stop at the supermarket near me. We'd listen to cheesy 90s songs in his car and talk about almost any thing. And when we got to the supermarket, we'd often just wander round still talking.

We'd become fairly close so, even much so that he'd ask me for fashion advice and drag me into helping him pick out new clothes.

When second year came around, I began to make friends with a girl called Abby who was doing a similar course in the same subject as me. As such, we'd often both spend time in the computer bank with Miles just working on our own stuff. It was nice to have another girl to spend time with as well.

I worked in a shop in a fairly remote part of town. Late one night I was cleaning up when some men tried to break in by smashing in the glass doors with a bat. Thankfully, when they saw me they ran back to their car and sped off but I was still shaken up. I remember being in tears with the ordeal and contemplating ringing Miles for help, but it was 1am and I wasn't sure if it would be the right thing to do.

When I got home I was greeted with a lecture from my father. The only time I ever saw him was when I was in trouble. I was told it was my fault that the break-in had happened because I don't pay attention to my surroundings.

I went back to school the next day, determined not to stop long enough to think about it. Every time I did all I close hear was the sound of glass smashing and it brought me to tears. I got a lot of coursework done that day because I didn't let myself stop. Abby saw right through me and demanded I talk about it.

Of course I started crying and she took me through to the stage area. Miles came in with a box of tissues and sat on the other side of me. I told them what had happened and the resulting fight with my father. Miles just stared at me and I wasn't sure why but it made me angry.
