Empty Your Cup

A university professor went to visit a famous Zen master. While the master quietly served tea, the professor talked about Zen. The master poured the visitor’s cup to the brim, and then kept pouring. The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself. “It’s overfull! No more will go in!” the professor blurted. “You are like this cup,” the master replied, “How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup.”

Interests can be endless. One visit to the NYT website attests to this fact. We can never get our fill. We have even made a virtue out of it. But it is much harder to sit silently and clear the mind. Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you for the comment. One way to experience emptiness is to stop breathing, just for a second or two. Your thoughts will stop too. Try it out :)

Yes, we have nothing to learn only to unlearn. Only by remaining still and calm will our mud settle and our water clear. You cannot learn the way but you can become the way.

Very True! :)
