The maze that Daedalus made wasn't made to hide the Minotaur. The Minotaur was put there to make it more difficult to escape, but what does the Minotaur represent? It represents your own fears, insecurities, prejudices, and obscuring beliefs that we all hold onto as humans that prevent you from moving forward on the windy labyrinth to enlightenment. Nuff said I think :)

Ps: This has all become Psychology 101 and we have moved away from the use of symbolism, which is sad because a symbol can hold meaning beyond mere words.

Archeologists know full well that there are many secret and hidden underground tunnels in the world. Tunnels go right underneath Jerusalem and it is thought that the Ark of the Covenant is buried in one of them. I tend to agree with you; the labyrinth might either be hiding something of great value or be a clue to finding something of great value.

All good questions that you ask. Perhaps it is a good thing that we still have some veiled mysteries; it allows the mind to flourish with possibility.

There was also a great labrynth associated with the pyramids of Egypt:
Done to protect the treaures there:

"According to the 5th-century BC Greek historian Herodotus, who stated that he himself had seen the building, the Egyptian Labyrinth was a vast structure on the shores of a large lake located seven days' journey up the Nile from the Pyramids at Giza. The temple was divided into twelve great courts and its walls were covered with sculpture, and a large pyramid decorated with colossal figures was connected to it by a subterranean passage. Herodotus emphatically presents the building as a marvel or wonder (thaumata) that eclipsed the Pyramids at Giza.

The 1st century BC Greek geographer Strabo is the only other eyewitness to the Egyptian Labyrinth whose account has survived. Strabo called it "a great palace composed of many palaces" and marveled at enormity of the stone slabs that made up its roof and walls. He wrote that it had many great courts, each with its own entrance, but that "in front of the entrances are crypts, as it were, which are long and numerous and have winding passages communicating with one another, so that no stranger can find his way either into any court or out of it without a guide."

    Heredotus says:
I visited this building and found it to surpass description; for if all the great works of the Greeks could be put together in one, they would not equal this Labyrinth. The Pyramids likewise surpass description, but the Labyrinth surpasses the Pyramids."

    —Herodotus, 5th century BC

"The few clues that we have indicate that the Labyrinth originally served many different purposes to the Egyptians. We know that it served as the mortuary temple of pharaoh Amenemhet III (19th century BC), the place on earth where Egyptians would make daily offerings to Amenemhet's spirit—for all eternity—to guarantee his prosperity in the afterlife.

the pyramid that formed a part of this complex contained its own fantastic maze hewn from stone, designed to guard Amenemhet's mummy from tomb robbers."

And so again, the labrynth was done to obscure, to hide secrets and wealth. I know many will say it is to create the idea of transfomation, a life and death transformation, as in present life to after life, and the path there-in..But there was also much more emphasis placed on protection of the material goods. That is all i really see happening here. protection of wealth . I think it is a stretch to assume a path to enlightenment is what is being presented here when used with the pyramids and the mintaur. Concerning the Egyptians, I think there is a corellation with the book of the dead that is also being offered. The Ancient Egyptians were an incredibly aware and sophiticated people.

So, the idea of the labrynth predates Christianity; however, it is not uncommon for pre Christian ideas to be woven into that ideology. It is indeed fascinating, and you obviously have read a lot about the subject; one thing occurs to me though; with the Egyptians the idea of protecting or providing for their dead Pharoah in the afterlife indicates dedication to one being...not dissimilar to Christianity in a way. I`m just throwing ideas aroung here, I must admit I`m out of my depth with this, so I`ll go and get clued up before I venture any further opinions. Thanks for an interesting topic.

Well there is a very strong association with the Egyptian mythology and Chriatianaity..Osiris also rises from the dead, and the Egyptians were very aware of an after life, and the payer the our father is associated with them..and the ten commandments are extremely similar to what is written in the prayers of the dead..except they say.. i did not kill, i did not lie etc..they are affirmations of what they did not do....after the fact of life. There are lots of examples. They also had a trinity..so they were a very spphistictaed people and had a sophisticated and complicated theology.

It may have been little more than a `folly`. The fact that it is thought provoking may be what it is about...to get you thinking, maybe about finding your way; how do Christians find their way in life? Through Jesus. `I am the way, the truth and the light`...I think that is what he said. Who knows really, but I think it has no obvious purpose or meaning, which is why I think it could be a folly.

the knights templars were sanctioned in 1129 The Church is firt and this labryinth comes into being they think around 1201..so it is after the time That Bernard De Calirvoux, goes to Jerusalem and suposidly excavates under the temple mount..I think they are boldly proclaiming something.and there are inscriptions or information involved with the construction of the cathederal. Chartres Cathederal has been comapared to the temple of Solomon...because of dimesion. but i don't know what other corellations there are. I am just presenting the idea, that there is way more there than we now see, or are willing to see.
