Atoms And The Stars

It is absolutely incredible to remember that (except for HLi and trace amounts of He you may have in your body...) EVERY atom in your body was forged in the heart of a star that lived and died billions of years before the Sun and the Earth came into existence.  The iron in our hemoglobin... the carbon at the centre of all our chemistry... the O that keeps us alive...  the Na and K that keeps our nervous system firing...  The Ca in our bones and teeth... and on... and on...  and on...
Our existence is truly transitory to an anonymous carbon atom that dwells within some part of us.  It has been a part of countless other organisms in the past, countless inorganic chemical reactions over the lifespan of the Earth.  It has been a traveler in the universe and will one day continue its journey when all things on this planet have passed.

For something that is so small, it makes me fell more than a little 'small' in the grand scheme of things.
