Tam O'Shanter Beret

"'Infinity chooses,' he [don Juan] said. 'The art of the warrior-traveler is to have the ability to move with the slightest insinuation, the art of acquiescing to every command of infinity. For this, a warrior-traveler needs prowess, strength, and above everything else, sobriety. All these three put together give, as a result, elegance.'"

~~ "The Active Side of Infinity" by Carlos Castaneda

I believe it's good to have goals.  I find writing a list of my goals help me stay focused.  I'm also aware that being too goal orientated can blind me to the Magic in the present.  That's why I like being flexible.

Two days ago, I bought a ball of wool to crochet a hat.  The last time I crocheted  anything was when I was at school.  I was probably 15 years old at the time, which is a long time ago.  I wondered if I could still do it.

Before I started my masterpiece, I asked my mother for pointers. She has crocheted lots of beautiful doilies, table tops, and chair backs, which she creates by following patterns.  She said she's never crocheted a hat before and suggested I look up hat patterns. I, on the other hand, only know basic crochet stitches and can't read patterns.  I figured I'd just go with the flow and let the hat that is hidden in the wool reveal itself.

At first, the hat that was coming out looked too small for my head so I undid it and made it larger. Then the hat got so large and flat that it was looking more like a doilie than a hat.  I knew I'd gone wrong somewhere so I undid the stitches. I then called on my invisible friends, who are experts at doing everything, for assistance.

I had an idea to use certain stitches and the hat started taking shape but it came out as a beret.  I tried it on and it fitted perfectly. When I showed it to my mother, she said it reminded her of a Tam O'Shanter beret.  She was amazed at how pretty it looked.  She asked me how I had created the shape and patterns. I told her I had no idea, they just came out the way they did.

Mum was also amazed how quickly I had completed it.  With my invisible friends helping me, it was effortless.

I started off with the intention to crochet a hat and was open for the hat to express itself in whatever form it saw fit. The last thing I expected was a Tam O'Shanter beret! I still have a lot of the wool left so I'm going to crochet a matching scarf.

Life is truly magical when I am flexible and let Life express through me in any way It chooes.
