Unexpected People Can Mean So Much...
My mother is a great woman. Almost anyone will tell you that... except if you are her children. A mix of depression, bi-polar disorder, prescription pain medication and a mix of other less notable things made my mother a difficult person to live with... to grow up with... to learn from... to love.
I can think of a variety of people through the years that made a positive impact on my life. People who, in their own ways, worked to undo the damage she inflicted (often unintentionally).
Thank you, Dr. Halon.
Thank you, Gwen.
Thank you, Mrs. Dietchman.
Thank you, Mrs. Senn.
Thank you, Aunt Theresa.
Thank you, Aunt Trudy.
Thank you, Ms. Marsala.
Thank you, Mary.
Each of these people did their part to make a difference in my life. I could wax poetic about each of them... and at some point, I probably will. But it is amazing that I can just sit back and think about what I have experienced over the years and although I am no "Precious" -- for arguments sake, I had it good comparatively -- I believe that it really does take a village. That raising children to be good people is the responsibility of the parent / parents... but sometimes when the parents can't or won't do it right... there is a place for others to step in, there is a place for the community -- the village -- to help raise that person up.
I believe this is my story and I think, after reading Sapphire's book "Push" which "Precious" is based on, this is the story of "Precious" too.

Posted Oct 28th, 2009 at 5:58PM I was very moved by your experience. My sister suffers from what your mother did. I have seen first hand what her illness has done and the lasting impressions it has made on the lives of my niece and nephew. I admire your courage for striving forward, and allowing others to help you get to where you are today. I don't know that my nephew will be so fortunate. God willing, I am going to do best to see that he does. you are indeed, precious. thank you xx~
Posted Nov 20th, 2009 at 9:23PM I agree that you are "precious" also. She may have had it rougher in your eyes but no one has lived your unique life experiences and it sounds like you really did live through a lot. I have a cousin with bi-polar disorder and recently did a psychology paper on it and I know that alone can be so devastating to all those involved with that person. Thank you for your courage to share and thanks to all those that were there to be a positive influence in your life! We have so many people in this world that deserve medals for stepping in and being the villagers that help raise the children all around them especially when the parents are doing the best job. I don't mean to be insulting to your mother but when you have addiction and mental illness that truly does affect how you parent. I grew up with an alcoholic and promiscuous mother and we were very poor on top of that so she worked a lot so I had a rough childhood due to these issues also. Luckily, I, like you, had people around me who stepped in and helped me along the way! Thank you for sharing and having the courage to share! :-)
