I Couldn't Be Prouder.

I idolised my grandfather whom I called Poppy. Although I didn't get to spend as much time with him (he passed away when I was 9) I will always treasure the time we did spend together. I didn't know this until just recently but he was a Sapper in the 9Th Division, in the R.A.E.M.E. bracket (Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers). He needed special training on top of their other work such as building bridges, air strips. They were the tradesmen of the army. On every job they had to do they had to carry their gun and shoot when necessary. Imagine trying to hammer a nail into something and having a shoot out. Poppy was involved in a couple of major battles, Tobruk, El Alamein, Cairo and not to forget Kokoda.

I think that he was a wonderful, brave man to go through this and not be jaded...well I guess you can say I put him on a pedestal.
