I lived in St. Andrews for 4 years and loved it - a beautiful little seaside town, albeit it has a fair sized University attached (plus a golf course which attracts the British Open once in a while).

But up the coast there were these beautiful little seaside towns, Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem, that I could imagine buying a cottage (for not too much) in and just disappearing, to live and write.

But then the nearest little City was Dundee, really dirt cheap houses in parts, and although I liked it in many ways, the rough parts were very rough....

Edinburgh and Glasgow, love 'em both, but would only consider Glasgow to live in, 'cos it's like 'Batman's' Gotham City. Edinburgh's a bit posey (sorry capital City).

Depends if you want seclusion or civilization...

Depends on where you're coming from and where abouts you want to stay... You'd be best trying to find a job before you move (if you don't have the money saved to be unemployed) then working out where you can afford with that. Also, you need to look into VISA's and stuff if you're coming from outside the UK/EU, etc.
