I absolutely loved this. Thank you so much for sharing this with me and all other military significant others. :)

It made me cry uncontrollably as my boyfriend is deploying this April.

The things we do out of patriotic duty...

Last century, it was a common experience around the globe to be a military widow, or to spend the rest of your life with a maimed husband.

50 yards from where I lived as a boy, the head of a family of 4 was a man in a wheelchair who never worked. He had lost the use of his legs in the Battle of the Bulge. The family lived better than we did, so the veteran's benefits were not too bad. Despite being paraplegic, he had fathered two children right after the war. The daughter was dutiful and no nonsense, like her mother. The son was a tragic case. He was bright and bookish, but had had a benign brain tumor. Removing it did not affect his intelligence, but had damaged his vision and coordination, and turned him into a sort of Asperger nerd with a very effeminate voice. I vaguely recall his dying before age 25. Mrs ran a gift shop for 15-20 years before her death.
