I Was Laid Off In May 2010

Don't really know why I'm here.  Just trying to see what others in my situation are thinking I guess.  I was laid off on May 19th, 2010, almost 2 months ago now.  I am trying to find work and am realizing there really isn't much going on.  I will just keep sending out apps and trying to learn some new skills until something happens.  I was at my last job for almost 12 years, so it's all kind of new to me.  I know people where I used to work that were laid off last year or the year before and still haven't found decent jobs again, so I have a feeling I'm in for a long hard search this time.  So far I haven't even got a response back from all the apps I've sent out in the last 6 weeks.  Seems like people at least used to respond to you one way or the other...LOL
Oh well, I have a family to support so I have to figure something out, just no other choice...I'm a computer programmer but who knows I may end up doing something completely different ...I just wish I didn't have to work for a corporation because it always seems like they lose money and then lay people off and it's hard to depend on that to support a family...I was thinking of trying to build some of my own mobile web apps and see where that takes me, but I don't even know how to do that yet, all my computer experience is with visual basic and pl/sql database reporting type, not web based programming.  but I guess that will give me something to do to keep me out of trouble while I'm not looking for jobs.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing others experiences and sharing some more here...and maybe learning a thing or two about how to do this unemployed thing and look for jobs and maybe also learn something about life who knows

Hi, can I ask when you are contacting companies who are you speaking with? As an experienced International Headhunter I suggest that you avoid Human Resources, they are only processing current job vacancies. If you for example are a Sales Manager, you want to be targeting the Sales Director or even the Managing Director of a company in the first instance. <br />
