My Best Friend's Love-Chapter 8Chapter 8: Quick Conversation
"Hello?" I said.
"Riley, it's Ashley. I don't have much time. Brit's gone to the grocery store."
"I've only got a few minutes," I said in a curt voice.
"I've missed you," she says softly. "I'm sorry I haven't called you before now. He's been watching me like a hawk."
"Well, a few minutes has turned into all the time in the world," I say with a soft laugh.
"Listen," she said quickly. "Can you get online tonight?"
"Sure, Ashley. What time?"
"Midnight?" She asked me.
"Where am I going to get online at?"
"Don't you have a computer where you work at? What do you do again?"
"I'm a police officer, and yeah, there's a computer at the station," I said. "Are you sure he won't catch you?"
"I'll make sure he doesn't," she said seriously.
"Be careful, Ashley. He might be dangerous."
"I know how to dial 911," she said.
"And if it comes to that, I'll show up personally."
"You don't know where I live," she said, confused.
"I sort of do," I said. "I'll explain it to you later, on chatango."
"Okay, Riley. His car just pulled up. Talk to you, later. Remember, midnight."
"Erase your call history," I told her.
"I'll do that," she said. "Later, Riley."
"Later," I said.
I hung up before I told her I loved her. That would really confuse her.
I went to my room and took a nap. When I wake up, it was ten-thirty. I'd slept for four and a half hours.
I get dressed in my uniform shirt and a pair of sweatpants, which I pull on over my boxers. I put on a pair of crew-cut socks, then pull on my Reebok tennis shoes. I make sure my laces are tied tightly.
At eleven-thirty, I left my house. I drove to the police station. Since I arrived early, I stepped into the dispatcher's room, and spoke to Addison.
"Riley, it's good to see you up and around," she said with a smile.
"Thanks," I replied.
"How's your girlfriend?"
"She's awake, and paralyzed from the waist down. She's living with her ex-boyfriend who is pretending to be her current boyfriend. She thinks he is, and it's killing me, Addison. I want her to remember that I'm her boyfriend, but she thinks we're just best friends. What's worse is I think she's falling for him again, and there's nothing I can do to stop it."
"You look good," she said. "A little more muscled up. Been working out?"
"Yeah, almost non
"What's he look like, anyway? Surely he can't compete with you."
"Ashley didn't even remember what I did for a living. He's not very attractive. And she once told me he had gingivitis."
"It's almost midnight," she said as she looked at her watch.
"She wanted to chat with me tonight, but she wants to make sure he's asleep. Ashley said she's sorry she hadn't contacted me 'til now, but that he's been watching her like a hawk."
"I hope she remembers you, Riley."
"Thanks, Addison. I'll talk to you later."
I walked to my desk and sat down. I booted my computer, checking my watch as it warmed up and came on. It was 11:59 p.m. When it was ready, I clicked on Firefox and hurriedly got to chatango.
